Monitoring Monitoring

Monitoring and event management are the main challenges for enterprises to ensure efficient providing of stable and highly performant system environments. The variety of customer's requiremets can be solved by commercial products like IBM Tivoli Monitoring 6 (ITM6 ®) and open source software as well.

ITM6Monitoring solution defined for an operating system (basis OS monitoring) includes following objects to check:

  • CPU utilization
  • Memory consumption
  • File system and disk usage
  • Processes and services availiability
  • System logfile monitoring
To monitor standard applications i.e. databases or web servers you can use the default agents delivered with the monitoring software and set up the required alarming.

To monitor customer's own applications you have to figure out the significant characteristics of a particular service and decide to cover all requirements by default agents or a new agent must be developed.

The picture shows a siplyfied ITM6 system environment. The ITM agents for OS/DB running on customer's servers provide measured values (attribute groups) i.e. CPU usage or free disk space to the Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server (TEMS). The situations created on TEMS compare the delivered values with defined thresholds and fire events to the Netcool instance to be visible in a console. Additional alarming via SMS or email can be implemented as well. The administrators use a browser to access the Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server (TEPS) to overview the whole environment.
